From November 1 to 11, 2023, the play Prince Panther will be performed at the Maison théâtre in Montreal. Loosely inspired by the graphic novel Panther by Brecht Evens, the play is produced by the Petit Théâtre de Sherbrooke and directed in Belgium and Quebec by Gilles Abel (Belgium) and Érika Tremblay-Roy (Québec) and is aimed at a school audience of 10 to 14 years old.
Summary
The day Christine's cat dies, a Panther Prince, straight from his kingdom of Panthesia, emerges from her dresser. Who is he and what does he want, with his sharp humor, his simpering and his fierce questions? Is he a friend or an enemy? And what to think of his sidekick Bonzo, wild and indomitable? Together, they form a duo of guides as flamboyant as they are playful for… yes, by the way, why are they there?
A strange and captivating dreamlike-philosophical cabaret, the show is built around interactions with the public: Prince Panther questions the young people, he literally wants to hear their answers. In front of a microphone, like a comedy sketch, or showing off his long tail and flamboyant costumes in a setting that is both bedroom and jungle, the Prince asks the questions that we dare not often not to ask.
The ambiguity of the character is delicious as well as disturbing, just like Panthésia, this invented refuge in which to take shelter when things are screaming too much inside, when the magma of emotions overwhelms us. Thanks to the healthy distance that theater creates, the play allows us to explore our gray areas. What to do with everything that is overflowing inside us?
